Blocks are done ...

It did not take as long as expected to make the two blocks today. After a couple of seams I think I knew how to make them and what I have to take care about.

It was harder to make a nice pic today. I think that took much longer and at the end I had to make them indoor. The wind was mobbing me :( What a pity because the colors are much nicer on the first picture. Anyway the blocks are done and I am happy! I like how they look and I am really pleased with the corners. Most of them match really nice.

I hope Cindy likes them. It was fun to make them. I would not make a whole quilt on my own. It is really hard to stay focused all the time even if you think this is an easy seam. The star was a huge challenge and I am happy I did it.

Busy ...

Endlich Wochenende!
Finally it is weekend! Actually I should be happy but the list for this weekend looks endless. There are some things that have to be done till Monday and in between there is rugby and a birthday party.
This week was busy. On Thursday the girls from the GAA St Michaels (gaelic football) hat a match. They did not bother about temperature and rain and had a great match and it hopefully it was fun for them too ...

... and on Friday we went to Sea2Sky. The kids had fun with all the experiments they could do. We also had free entrance to the aquarium on this day so we said "hi" to Valentine (a white ray) ...

... and I could hold a spider crab for the first time. A perfect dinner *gg*

Can you see the "small" plaster on my hand? That happens if you don't take care when cutting with a  rotary cutter AND it has a new blade too (just because of the Japanese Fabric Swap). After this little accident I had to stop sewing. Hopefully I can go back tomorrow and finish the blocks for the Modern Irish Bee! So sorry Cindy but it will be in the post on Monday!

Last Minute Quilt ...

... is finished! I am so happy now! The kids were happy too when they finally removed the last pins and we went to the garden to take some pictures ...

... before the sun was gone. So that is my last minute quilt. Actually I wanted to make just wonky log cabins but now I am happy with the white blocks. They make the wonky blocks really shiny and bright. I love the colors! It is perfect for dark winter evenings. I hope she loves the quilt too.

Yesterday I got really scared when I saw that the backing is to small. I was really hoping the yellow fabric is enough to match the size of the top but just for safety I added an orange stripe as well. This morning I checked the size of the backing and it was just enough! Puhhh! I was so relieved when I laid them together. No need to rush and get more fabric.

It doesn't look so bad *gg* I did not do much quilting. Just straight lines on the sashing. I need to start FMQ soon.

The only thing left now is to wish it a good journey and Happy Birthday!

Happy Monday ...

I like Mondays. I like going back to routine and the silence in the house for a couple of hours. Today was different because I have to make my "Last Minute Quilt". I unfortunately did not have time yesterday. I had to go up in the trees :)

I was exciting! On different ropes and logs you walk from tree to tree. Sometimes you could hang on the rope and just slide to the other side but most of the time the high is challenging. We did three of the courses but my son wanted to make pictures when I do the red route. It was cool to go on a BMX between the trees, walk over wobbly logs, climb up a wall but it was also really exhausting. The climbing wall up on the tree was really a big challenge and at the end I was happy going down again. It was a pity that we could not go the blue one. That would have been really fun but he needs to be 12. So we come back than!

So I could not sew any blocks yesterday and needed to catch up today. The top is finished now but I don't know if I like it. Anyway I don't have time to change something so it has to stay the way it is. Unfortunately the backing was to short so I tried to upsize it. I just hope it worked cause I did not have time to check when I finished. Need to do this in the morning so I can buy more fabric tomorrow in town. Hopefully the quilt will be finished on Wednesday.

Last minute ...

One done, four more to go ...
At the moment all goes on Last Minute. So I got the official invitation to a birthday party for Saturday (luckily the Mother buys the presents for the twin 'cause I can't find time till Saturday) and this week all the after school classes start. That means I have to meet the teachers and pay. What can I say ... One done, four more to go! ... Also the Parents-Teacher-Meetings are on this week and because I did not have enough to do I started a quilt today and it had to be finishes yesterday. I made the first block today and I think I will like the quilt.

I love wonky log cabins but I never have done them before. I hope it works out fine. Anyway I have lots of work to do if I want to finish this one in time - there will also be some night shifts to get this one done. I am glad to have Cindy close so I could meet her today to get the fabrics. Of course there were some other fabrics in the bag:

I have a plan what to do with this lovelies but this has to wait an other week. Unfortunately there was so less time today so we only could have a little chat. So I forgot to tell her, that I think I figured out how to do the seams on her Modern Irish Bee block. Yesterday I fixed the corner I did wrong the first time and the seams don't match so bad.

Last but not least: I am accepted at the Mouthy Stitches Swap! Hurray!!! You won't believe how mouthy these ladies can be! Unbelievable *gg* So I have done the first two tasks to definitely get my place: fill out the form and get an email and make a mosaic about what you like! Both things done and because it takes until Saturday to get known who will be my partner I can relax and sew my quilt top :)

It is weekend ...

Perfect timing if you get a cold at the weekend. Perfect timing if you actually have a really long list of things to be done like cutting fabric for the Japanese Fabric Swap. So the list gets longer every day but sneezing at the sewing machine is not fun and cutting with teared eyes is much less fun. However I had to go to Rugby yesterday in the morning and thanks to Rachel (she told me the mistake in my block) I used the time sitting in the car ribbing the seams of. At least it was warm and windless in the car, I had a coffee (which did not really taste good) and could watch the boys playing.

Some weeks ago I found this book again and because I already bought stitching fabric in Austria (the one with the big wholes) I started an owl. Just a little craft I can take with me.

Today we want to go to the cinema and watch "Brave". I hope I can follow the Scottish accent but at least time flies bye while waiting for the email to be in Mouthy Stitches 2. Fingers crossed I get a place!

Japanese Charm Swap and Ironman 2012 ...

Now the summer is definitely over as my son decided to play rugby again. So I am off with him every Saturday morning and standing on the pitch freezing. As long as he likes it and it is outside I am fine. On Sunday we made it to watch the cyclists at Ironman 2012. So it was a good way to do some practice with the camera and it was lots of fun as soon as I figured out how to do it.

Finally the fabric for the Japanese Charm Swap arrived and I could start cutting. Even the new blade is already bought so no excuses ... just need to take lots of deep breathes ....

Of course this was not the only beauty in the parcel. I also ordered this fat8 and the ribbon had to jump into the basket as well. I love the bus and Big Ben. Isn't this cute? Oh I need to go back to London soon ...

There are lots of birthdays coming up soon so I thought I might make an other mug rug for this girl. I thought this one might be much easier. My seam ripper became my best friend and I almost threw it into the bin.

At the end I did not care that the right ear is not perfect but as I made the head twice I was happy that it worked out at the end. I hope the little lady doesn't mind about it and she will love the mug rug (when it is finished). Actually it was a good practice for the Modern Irish Bee and because the fabrics did not arrive till now I will enjoy the sun today :)

Stash Bee September ...

Finally I am Bee Queen for the first time for the Stash Bee Hive #2. I was thinking a long time and had a couple ideas (ie the wonky star which we already did) but finally I decided for you to make "Converging Corners". This block is simple but also a bit tricky. I failed two times :)

This was one of my examples I made for you to show what I want you to do. I don't want to give you lots of measurements. Just use what works right for you. I want you to make a finished block size 12.5'' and use Kona white. If you have please use modern fabrics and please don't use just dark colors. Make it a bright and shiny block If you need an excuse: please go shopping ;) I am sure you will find the right fabrics in your stash.

And now how to make it:
For the center you can chose if you want to use a white block or colored. If you chose to use a colored block, please round it with a white border (as you see in my block). The color does not need to be in the center at the end. It it turns out wonky that is fine. Here you can see my examples (just to say it is a coincident that I always used the same fabric for the corner) ...

The block is easy to make:
I started to look for stripes I want to use and arranged them on a white fabric. The stripes should be different sizes. You don't need to use the same fabrics for both corner sides. There is no need to keep the corner in one color range.

After I prepared the stripes and sew a peace of white fabric to the end of the stripes, I laid them down again so that I could check and don't get mixed up (what I always do). In that block I used a white center about 4.5''.

Than I started to sew around. First I took the top stripe and the bottom one and sew them to the center block. I press the seam outside but feel free to press the seams open. Trim the block you made and go on sewing the stripes to the sides. You have finished your first round.

Repeat this until your block sizes 12.5''. I most of the time ended with two or four rounds. You don't need to have the same number of corners on both sides (ie end up one corner with 2 and the other with 4 rounds). I always used stripes between 1'' to 2''. Feel free to use smaller stripes or maybe up to 2.5'' if that suits you better. Just take care that the outer corner is bigger than the inner. That was my mistake on the green block as you can see ....

You also can look at this tutorial. If you have any questions just email me: mail_from_cheeky_monkey@yahoo.com

I hope you have fun making the block :)
